The Umbrella Corporation, legendary creators of the T-virus, have an underground facility called The Hive. Without warning, the supercomputer in charge of the security and day-to-day running of that structure goes out-of-control, sealing all labs within The Hive and killing everyone inside. However, the trapped workers don't stay dead so when a specialised Umbrella military team are sent in to take the supercomputer down, they unwilling unleash hundreds of flesh-hungry Zombies. Suddenly, the military team's carefully planned mission becomes a frantic battle for survival as they race to the exit before the doors seal for good, trapping them in an underground tomb.
It should be made clear from the outset that this movie shares the name and overarching story with the hit Resident Evil game but pretty much nothing else - while the game was all about puzzle-solving survival-horror, Resident Evil the movie is very much an all-action affair. I'm okay with this as, after some initial disappointment of not seeing a true game-to-film crossover (which would be mind-blowingly excellent if done well), I realised that this movie is just a bit of boyish fun with Zombies. There are methodical, trained soldiers with guns, frantic shouting as things get out-of-control, just the right amount of gore, loud music and hordes of snarling dead people in various states of decay - there is even a Licker, another link to the Resident Evil game series. Not much else can be said; don't watch it expecting great things, Oscar-winning acting or a landmark story and you will be guaranteed an entertaining film.
