2021 has begun and it has many sights to show you. Over the next three weeks, I'll be chronicling the deadliest of undead monstrosities that lie among them. First up, the movies.
Unsurprisingly, given the horror that almost saw a real Zombie apocalypse in 2020, most of our most-loved forms of cinematic goodness were delayed from yesteryear - a slumbering corpse not yet able to rise from its ghastly tomb, if you will. These worm-ridden projects are mentioned in a special MIA section at the end to signify their tardiness. There are a few new projects - rustling dirt to give indication of future re-animations - but, from their descriptions, whether that be good or bad, I dare not say.
This will be the fifth time George A. Romero's original undead classic is being remade. The story is being kept pretty much intact; the living dead assaulting a small group of survivors - hopefully they'll bring at least something new to the table but not go to far off-script (avoiding the horrendous mistake of the abysmal Day of the Dead: Bloodlines). None of this film has been shot yet and very little information about it has surfaced so I expect this one to slip into 2022.

I really cannot believe I have to mention something as crass as this Zombie-Comedy movie on The Dead Times, but, hey, it might be a smash hit… maybe. In a small town, a hitman unwittingly unleashes a violent creature and soon, the entire town comes under attack. Quoting from IMDB "Hold it while you can, but the next time you 'gotta go', check the toilet first.". Yeah, sounds like a real winner to me.
Here comes another trash Zombie movie that nobody wants; Gym of the Dead. This movie sounds so pathetically awful, I simply refuse to reword the description into something enticing so I'll just copy it direct from IMDB; "The film that finally answers the age old question: Where is the best place for Zombie men to meet Zombie women. From the studio that brought you Zombie Love Cruise.".

This Zombie movie sounds as weird as they come. The story goes that Zombies have been hiding underground for 10, 000 years and when they finally emerge, they are more 'advanced' than regular humans. However, Zombies - irrespective of their intelligence - are still dead people and the living just cannot stand all these deceased humans walking about; it's just not right. This civil unrest births an outcry for Zombie rights.

Steel-Man is Pittsburgh's Official Superhero and, during his annual Comic Book Convention, he is besieged by a grotesque army of dead, including the rest of the Pittsburgh underworld.
A group of paranormal investigators enter an uncharted forest to get some spooky sightings. The crew soon discover more than they bargained for as a legion of 'Carriers' - living dead plague victims who died in the forest centuries before - surround them.

This Netflix movie and sequel to Zack Synder's amazing Dawn of the Dead remake is probably only a few months from release - although no official launch has been given. Filming has completed on the movie's prequel, a 'Making of' book has been announced with a firm June 1st release date and Netflix have given the go ahead to a animated prequel TV series. With all this, Netflix execs are clearly eager to give the main movie all the support it needs to be released, on time and to the wonderfully-high standard expected.
Being first introduced to the wonderful world of Zombies by video game Resident Evil, I am really, really excited for this movie. The original series of RE movies focused on action and were definitely worthwhile views but this reboot focuses on horror and the chilling sense of fear provided by the first two games. Filming has completed and a tentative September release date has been set.

While the future of The Walking Dead TV show is set in stone right now, the state of the movie version (the first of a planned trilogy) is far from clear. The latest info that we received was that the creative minds behind the film were still playing around with ideas. They had intended to go in full production but then that damnable virus hit and everything went out-the-window. However, they are adamant that this delay is actually a good thing, allowing them time to really get Rick Grimes' character right. It also means that filming has not even started yet so I expect this one to slip into next year or even beyond.

I'm bulking the two announced English-language remakes - that of One Cut of The Dead and Train to Busan - into one section as there has been absolutely no new information. None. Zero. Zip.

Here's another movie that has seen no new information in the past year. If it ever existed, and I am not convinced it was anything more than idle talk to drum up business for a failing company, it will likely never see the light of day.
This troubled Zombie movie has had a hell of a development cycle so far. Successfully backed on Indiegogo way back in 2015, the film has had more setbacks to production than I dare count. Communicating with the team behind the film on Facebook, I can confirm that the plighted movie is still in the works, progress was even looking good until the virus that shall not be named reared its head and ruined everything.
Rise is officially the title of Rise of the Living Dead - the movie from George Romero's son I listed as last year. Aside from that, no new info (discounting a rumour that the movie will now actual be a graphic novel) - the future looks bleak for this one.
Wolfe Island is the "unofficial" new title of George Romero's last film George A. Romero presents; Road of the Dead. Nothing official has been said about this film in many years so I fear it may be time to hang up the torch and accept our fate, it is never going to be released. For the info on what happened and is happening on this film project, check out the interview with director Matt Birman from Bloody Disgusting.
2021 has risen from the sodden ground of 2020. In the first part of my annual round-up of all the Zombie things to look forward to in the coming year, we shuffle ourselves on over to have a gander at the movies.
